Chris Sterling

Chris and Ellen Sterling (Ellen is also West High, class of 1962) live in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC where Chris is on the faculty at George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs.  He joined the faculty in 1982 after two years at the Federal Communications Commission as a special assistant to one of the commissioners. He was in GW's administration (as associate dean for graduate affairs in the arts and sciences) for seven years--and doesn't miss it.  During the 1970s he taught at Temple University in Philadelphia.  He's written, co-authored or edited more than 20 books now, most of them about telecommunications or electronic media subjects. Several others are under way. He founded and still edits a quarterly journal of book reviews (now in its 37th year) and serves on the editorial boards of several other academic journals. More about all of that--and current projects and avocations--can be found at www.ChrisSterling.com

Our two adult daughters live nearby. Jennifer (born in Madison as Chris finished up grad school, and mother of our first grandchild, Rachel, who turns three in 2006) is CEO of a million dollar branding and graphic design firm while Robin works as a senior civilian consultant to the U.S. Navy. We see them both regularly.  Ellen and Chris have been in all 50 states (well, almost--Ellen is missing Alaska), have made one round-the-world trip (a decade ago), and have traveled in Europe and Asia.  Chris has also been to South America three times on academic consulting trips. We especially love driving trips to avoid the hassle of flying. We get back to Madison fairly regularly to see friends. It's still a wonderful town--and so nice to see the trees back after the Dutch Elm disaster.

We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in October 2005. Chris hopes to teach for several more years before retiring, and has a research sabbatical coming up in the Spring of 2007.  We hope to get to Africa, and back to parts of Europe we've not yet seen, among other travel plans.
